Hilton Head National Golf Course

Best Golf Vacations in South Carolina

One of my favorite golfing destinations is Hilton Head National golf course. This Hilton Head SC golf course consists of 27 holes and provides all players with a full day of challenging fun.

Gary Player was the designer for the original 18 holes of this course and then Bobby Weed created the final nine holes for the site in 1999. A great feature of these golf courses on Hilton Head is that the setting is totally natural.

You don't have to contend with the distractions of homes or construction as you play along the fairways. Today it is becoming rare to find a course without homes nestled along the perimeter.

If you have ever visited site of the Masters in Augusta, Georgia you will be struck by the great similarity between these Hilton Head golf courses. The color on both fairways is a lush, rich green and there are vibrant azaleas that add reds, pinks and white blooms to the beauty of the landscape. Both Hilton Head SC golf courses also have tall, swaying pines and majestic hardwoods that add beauty and contrast to their well manicured layouts.

The Hilton Head National golf club is only a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean which is one of my favorite features of golf courses on Hilton Head. Water does factor into your play when you visit Hilton Head National Golf Club, but only at a few of the holes on the course.

If you are still a beginner you should not be afraid to tackle this very forgiving Hilton Head SC course. The wide fairways are capable of handling many errant shots and this always gives a much needed boost to the confidence of players who are less experienced.

With 3 sets of 9 hole courses to choose from you can create the ideal golfing experience of your dreams and one of your best golf vacations. The courses at Hilton Head National golf club are referred to as the Weed, the Player and the National. Each one has its own requirements and there will be one that appeals to your playing style more so than the others.

When you play on the Weed you will meet the biggest lake on all 3 courses. You can’t miss it because it runs along the entire right side of the signature 6th hole, and then snakes around behind the green.

From tee to flag it is only 300 yards, 250 if you use a middle tee, and this is one of the ultimate “risk for reward” opportunities at Hilton Head National golf course. If you misread and fire that shot 10 yards to the right or left of the pin you can write the 6th off then and there. Altogether these 9 holes have more undulations than the other 18 combined so be prepared to read this Hilton Head golf course at every opportunity.

The Player presents golfers with lots of challenge. One of the best holes is the 8th which is only a par 3, but the hole is an incredible experience. There are 7 tee positions available and you can lower the yardage to a paltry 125 yards or play the full 175 yards, it’s your choice. The 8th takes you over the water though, and there is no way around it. Make it in 3? It can be done, but hold onto the high 5 until you see that ball drop in.

The National consists of 9 holes that have longer par 4s and you will be up to 420 yards at only the 3rd hole. The 4th hole is a par 3 and seems like an easy enough shot to make at the beginning, but it has an elevated tee that requires precision and accuracy or you will not make that well bunkered green.

This 300 acre Hilton Head SC golf course will challenge every golfer but one thing is certain it never makes you feel overwhelmed. The pristine environment is so harmoniously blended with nature that your round of golf will seem more like a visit to a private, exclusive retreat. The Hilton Head National golf club is a course that requires you to play well, but does not overly penalize small missteps which is a feature that every golfer enjoys.

You will enjoy stopping in at the Hilton Head National golf course clubhouse where you will find a pro shop packed with all the accessories and equipment you could possibly use. Guests are welcome to sign up for instructions and lessons and you can book your tee times online to golf Hilton Head. Food and beverage services are available on the course or at the club where visitors can relax and unwind with drinks or a meal.
