Hilton Head Deep Sea Fishing

hilton head deep sea fishing

Hilton Head deep sea fishing trips are led by guides who are experienced fisherman and boat captains who know where to go at various times of the year. You'll want to plan a Hilton Head deep sea fishing trip with an experienced crew and one with a good track record.

We recommend you visit the docks or call ahead to talk to the charter boat captains to see which one best fits you. The two companies which we have used are Outside Hilton Head (mid-island) and Drifter and Gypsy Excursions (South Beach Marina). We had good experiences with both.

Hilton Head charter fishing boats are available for in-shore (Calibogue Sound) and off-shore (Atlantic Ocean) fishing. Drift fishing (the boat does not move) with a dozen or more people on a party boat is one option. This type of Hilton Head deep sea fishing usually stays in-shore or not far off-shore and some will go to a reef.

You can also take a Hilton Head charter fishing trip on a boat carrying up to six people both in-shore or off-shore which will troll fish (dragging it behind the moving boat), typically called deep sea fishing. Trips are usually a half day or full day.

For some serious Hilton Head deep sea fishing, anglers will go 70 miles from shore to the Gulf stream. This Hilton Head fishing trip will last all day and it’s great fishing but a long day. The best time to take this Hilton Head charter fishing trip is in the summer.

Everything you need for a Hilton Head fishing trip is provided by those you choose to charter your trip. They usually provide a cooler for food and drinks.

Hilton Head Charter Fishing for Shark

If you want to try your hand at catching a shark, plan your Hilton Head charter fishing trip for the summer months and get ready for a rod bending experience you will never forget! Shark fishing trips usually leave late in the day or early evening.

This trip is good for those that don’t want to go off-shore fishing (a full day) but want the excitement and thrill of a Hilton Head deep sea fishing trip. The travel time to shark waters is only about 15 minutes from South Beach Marina. Travel time may be a little longer from mid-island.

A Black Tip shark, which our older son caught, gave a lot of action by putting up quite a fight even after it had been brought onto the boat. Yikes!

Hilton Head Island encourages catch and release so as to practice smart fishing.

Fly Fishing

With the grassy marshes and low waters fly fishing is at its best on Hilton Head Island and a fantastic Hilton Head fishing experience. The fly fishing possibilities are endless with the miles and miles of tide waters and marshes. Methods may change on a seasonal basis which allows for many different site fishing scenarios. Consult with the guide.

Freshwater Hilton Head Fishing

Freshwater fishing on Hilton Head may be challenging. Most of the creeks are not freshwater but are estuaries that carry saltwater in them from the tidal action of the sea. Some lakes and lagoons are fresh water but this is usually rain water runoff.

Jarvis Creek Park is a great spot to do some freshwater fishing but watch out for the alligators and turtles. The fishing action here is fantastic, far from boring. The park is located at the corner of William Hilton Parkway (route 278) and Cross Island Parkway. Look for Wal-Mart and Publix. Don't forget to get a Hilton Head fishing license at Wal-Mart.

Seasons Of Fishing

The time of year has everything to do with what kind of fish are in the waters during your Hilton Head deep sea fishing trip. The months of summer bring brings sharks and tarpon. Fall brings Speckled Trout and Flounder to the waters of Hilton Head and Redfish school at this time. The winter months have Redfish. Cobia and Tripletail are abundant in the spring. Plan your fishing trip around the seasons.

What To Bring

Wear shoes that do well in water and have a light jacket with you even in the summer months. You will also want to take sunscreen and bug repellent. Bring food and drinks for the cooler.

A Hilton Head deep sea fishing trip is one way to get the most out of your trip to Hilton Head. Plan a Hilton Head charter fishing trip and plan to have a great time.
